Whenever anyone asks us which is the highest mountain on EARTH; the one and only mountain name that come into our mind is MOUNT EVEREST. Yes, it is the highest mountain but on Earth only. There are many mountains whose height is higher than Mount Everest.

But, the mountain about which we are going to talk OLYMPUS MONS is the highest mountain till now, discovered in the Universe. The first question that strikes in our mind should be that, if it is not situated on Earth then where is its location. It is located at MARS; the red planet in our Solar System. It is also known as GIANT MOUNTAINS.
The interesting fact about these mountains is that along with the highest peak it is also the large volcano mountain.
It is situated in THARSIS MONTES region near the Martian equator. It is a shield volcano whose diameter is about 624 kilometres. Here shield volcano means that the eruption is a slow process that the lava erupted slowly instead of a violent eruption. If we compare it to EARTH, the volcano of the earth is very small. The largest volcano on Earth is MAUNA LOA's and it is only 10 kilometres. high. Now, you can imagine how small Mauna loa is. In fact, the mountain OLYMPUS MONS can accommodate all HAWAIIAN's Island.
HOW? How this much big volcano?
The weirdest thing, that came to our mind how anything should be this much high. What is the reason behind this?
The biggest difference is in its size. It is about 100 times larger than any other volcano on EARTH.
Scientists said that it should because of low-surface gravity of the mars with high eruption led to the pile-up of Lava.
The tectonic plates also play a major role in determining this. Just like Earth has 7 major tectonic plates which is constantly but very very minutely changing its position which can lead to landslides or natural disaster. But on mars, there is no movement showed by the mountain, so the lava did not flow farther away and get up pile over each other.
