It is a vital source of life. We need it for all living things /organisms survival. From lighting a candle to cook food, for a bonfire; we need fire and this can happen when the gaseous substance oxygen is present. So, we can imagine how drastic life would be without oxygen.
Now, some of our friends might think it would be good to have enough pure oxygen on Earth. But it is not good.

If oxygen will be increasing:
It would be led to an increase in the size of an insect forming giant insect.
How astronauts live in space?
As we have discussed that pure oxygen is very harmful to us. Then how an astronaut managed to live in space, how patient are kept on the ventilator. This could happen just because of proper management. The doctor gives an accurate amount of pure oxygen that is required not over-doses. But in the atmosphere, there will be no limitations so it is dangerous for us.
Do it cause any disease?
Oxygen: Breathing pure oxygen for a long period of time led to a chemical reaction in the body, which lead to the formation of an unstable atom referred to as "RADICAL". This unstable atom harms different cells of our body and often proteins, fats are also damaged by this. It does not only led to a massive fire, but the excessive amount of oxygen led to a disease known as ALZHEMEIRS. It occurs when we breathe, pure oxygen too much. Alzheimer's is a disease that led to a mental disorder of a person.
HYPEROXIA:- It is also a disease, occurs due to exposure of cells, tissues, organs to an excess Oxygen. It is often said that hyperoxia happens due to the presence of excess oxygen either in the Lungs or any cells. This might lead to oxygen toxicity. There are two types of oxygen toxicity
- CENTRAL NERVOUS SYSTEM TOXICITY
- PULMONARY and OCULAR TOXICITY
How oxygen affects our age?
A group of scientists at the German Cancer Research Center in Heidelberg had discovered a protein for the first time, that acts as a central switching point in the ageing process. Oxidative stress is responsible for this ageing.
But the question arises what is oxidative stress?
Oxidative stress could be said as the balance between the production of reactive oxygen species (radicals) and antioxidant defences in our body. Radicals are atoms with free electrons. There are many causes of oxidative stress.
- POLLUTION
- SMOKING or any other tobacco consumption
- ALCOHOL consumption
- OBESITY
- EXPOSURE to radiation, etc
If reactive oxygen accumulates in our body, it will surely harm us. This will led to cause damage in DNA and also in proteins and lipids. This action might led to the death of a cell and so tissues and finally organisms. Because humans are a group of organs, Organs are a group of tissues, Tissues are a group of cells, Cells are the functional unit of life. So, if a cell gets any damaged then the organisms also have to suffer from the same.
